Engine ticking when warm

    Hi all, wonder if you could help me? My January 2004 MINI one has started to make a noise what i can only describe as a ticking noise. This happens from start up so on a cold engine, also on an engine that has been driven and run for 5 mins. I have read on MINI2 that this could be a fan belt...

    the clicking noise is from metal in the exhaust system cooling down. when the metal is heated by the engine running the metal expands and when engine is shut off metal starts cooling immediately and the metal contrasts back to orginal size. there are other parts cooling down also but the exhaust takes the brunt of the heat outside of the engine.

    The sound is an inconsistent but repetitive tick. It is present only when the engine is warm and it has to be in Park or Neutral and is harder to notice if engine is revved to around 2000 RPM, but when the engine speed increases, the sound is also more intense and faster.

    I get a ticking sound from the engine from 1800 to 3000 rpms. Its more prominent around 2000 rpms. But this is what makes me confused. It doesnt do it when the engine is cold, or warming up. Just at operating temp. This afternoon i went to wal-mart to get some oil to change, and when i left, the temp gauge says it was at normal, but no ticking.

    Just to clarify, this is not a sound the engine makes at start up, or during warm up. The ticking sound usually occurs after the car has been driven 10 or 15 minutes at highway speeds. The dealership has now had the car for three days. Last word was that they were contacting the GTO rep.

    You can usually remove the valve covers, and reinstall the coil packs to be able to run the engine with the valve covers removed. The noise is very much more discernible now, and moving from cylinder to cylinder with a screwdriver or other listening tool, you can locate which cylinder has the noise.

    Start and warm the engine up enough so that it idles good. Loosen each valve adjuster lock nut and turn the adjuster shaft with a screw driver. The valve will get noisy and the engine RPM will go up. You want the highest engine RPM with the lowest tappet noise. Do this on each valve. You will notice that the engine RPMs go way up.
