the clicking noise is from metal in the exhaust system cooling down. when the metal is heated by the engine running the metal expands and when engine is shut off metal starts cooling immediately and the metal contrasts back to orginal size. there are other parts cooling down also but the exhaust takes the brunt of the heat outside of the engine.

Feb 28, 2018 · The ticking would become faster with increasing engine revolutions and slower when getting off the loud pedal. I tried different grades of fuel (E10, 95, 98) and injector cleaners to rule out any fuel issues or carbon build-up.
This is quite common and the switch to Mobil 1 is the noted fix, and generally if you have Mobil 1 and still hear the ticking, letting the engine warm up and going for a brisk drive usually takes care of the problem.. If you still have the ticking I would have it checked out, just in case.
The sound is an inconsistent but repetitive tick. It is present only when the engine is warm and it has to be in Park or Neutral and is harder to notice if engine is revved to around 2000 RPM, but when the engine speed increases, the sound is also more intense and faster.

Just to clarify, this is not a sound the engine makes at start up, or during warm up. The ticking sound usually occurs after the car has been driven 10 or 15 minutes at highway speeds. The dealership has now had the car for three days. Last word was that they were contacting the GTO rep.
You can usually remove the valve covers, and reinstall the coil packs to be able to run the engine with the valve covers removed. The noise is very much more discernible now, and moving from cylinder to cylinder with a screwdriver or other listening tool, you can locate which cylinder has the noise.

I received confirmation yesterday that my 96' FZJ80 needs a rebuild or a used engine swap. My mechanic dropped the pan and advised that 2 cylinders were pretty beat up along with the crank shaft. Rather then lament my bad fortune, I am going to look at the news as an opportunity to upgrade to a 4.7L 2UZ from 1998-2002 UZJ100.

May 22, 2011 · Same here, my car has 166,000 miles on it, this engine has ticked since it was new when cold, but after its warm it goes away, and if you rev it while it's ticking it goes away too. So I've concluded it's normal, so many other cars do it too with no consequence I've quit caring about it.
Start and warm the engine up enough so that it idles good. Loosen each valve adjuster lock nut and turn the adjuster shaft with a screw driver. The valve will get noisy and the engine RPM will go up. You want the highest engine RPM with the lowest tappet noise. Do this on each valve. You will notice that the engine RPMs go way up.
